Aderan the Crownless

Age of the Broken Oath

Aderan the Crownless

He wanted to save magic. He ended an age instead.

Aderan was the best king the Crown Lands ever had. At least that is what the chronicles written before his fall say. He built roads, reconciled the great houses and was the first to invite Vark envoys to the capital.

But he saw what others refused to see. Magic was fading. Crystals dimmed, forges needed more and more ore, and dragons hatched less and less often. Aderan feared his grandchildren would live in a world without the Flame.

Then a tall guest in a grey cloak came to him. He gave no name. He offered a simple solution: gather all the magic of the world in one place, under one crown, and share it fairly. Nobody would ever waste a spark again.

Aderan believed him. He broke the oaths sworn with the six other crowns and began taking over their forges and archives. By the time he understood who his adviser was, it was too late. The Seven Crowns fell in a single night.

Part of his soul was bound by foreign magic. Today Aderan the Crownless leads troops under black banners against the people he once protected. Sometimes, though, his soldiers fall back without orders, and letters in his hand that were never sent have been found in their camps.

In the Valley of Rebirth explorers are now searching for his lost coat of arms. Whoever finds it may learn how much of the old king is still left.
